Images of Compound Affect (IsCA)
Images of Compound Affect (IsCA) is a set of 156 posed facial expression photographs, organised as compound configurations associated with common emotion labels (e.g., happiness, sadness, anger, disgust, fear, surprise, contempt). A second set (IsCA+) adds colour bounding boxes and hand-drawn markup to support reference and training use.

Overview
The set is organised by compound type (e.g., combinations of “upper-face” and “lower-face” action patterns, as well as neutrality in one region). These arrangements are suited to studies of face processing and emotion labelling, including work with clinical populations, and can also support training, technology development, and controlled pose feasibility work.
The intent here is reference-grade stimulus material: controlled, systematically organised images with supporting documentation.
How the dataset is organised
The dataset is grouped by compound configuration types, including combinations where one face region is neutral and the other is expressive, and combinations where two emotion-associated patterns appear in a single region.
IsCA+ adds visual markup (bounding boxes and hand annotations) to support training and reference use, including for certified and trainee FACS coders.
Access and use
The ReShare record provides open access download bundles, documentation, and licensing information. Use the ReShare page as the canonical source for the most current files, metadata, and citation guidance.
If you are using the dataset for coding, training, or model evaluation, treat the documentation as part of the dataset itself: it explains what the images are intended to represent and the limits of the set.
